Science
The students in room 122 have finished their investigation on why ducks don’t get wet. The students learned that ducks have a structure called an oil gland. One of the duck’s behaviors is preening or where the duck gets oil from their oil gland and spreads it over their feathers. In order to help students understand and experience how preening works, students conducted a hands on activity. Each group of students had 2 feathers. They sprayed one feather with water and watched the water soak into the feather. Before spraying the second feather with water, the students coated it with oil or preened it. Upon spraying the second feather with water, the students noticed the water “bubble” on it and the water did not soak in.
March is Reading Month Games
On Fridays in March, the third graders will be playing reading board games with parents/guardians. We are looking for parents/guardians to play with and “run” the games to ensure that the kids are playing correctly. Not only will this be fun, but the kids will be learning valuable reading strategies. Environmental Interpretive Center Field Trip
The third grade classes will be taking a field trip to the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Environmental Interpretive Center. Due to scheduling, each class will be going on this trip separately. Our class is scheduled to go on Tuesday, March 8th. We will eat lunch early, leave Arno at 11:40, and return to Arno around 1:50.
We will be learning how to identify different types of trees, how to tap syrup from maple trees, and activities related to this experience. This field trip does require a hike through the woods, so please send your child to school with winter snow boots, winter coat, hats, gloves, and scarves.
I have included a copy of the permission slip and chaperone form in case you need another copy. The field trip fee is $4.00 per student. Please have all forms and money turned in ASAP.
Reading Homework Update
Starting this week, students will not be using their yellow reading book for the reading homework. The reading homework will have 2 short stories to read and each story will have about 8 short answer questions. Please make sure your child completes the answers in complete sentences.
Please have your child bring their yellow reading book to school and put it in his/her desk for future use.
