 Science

The students in room 122 have finished their investigation on why ducks don’t get wet. The students learned that ducks have a structure called an oil gland. One of the duck’s behaviors is preening or where the duck gets oil from their oil gland and spreads it over their feathers. In order to help students understand and experience how preening works, students conducted a hands on activity. Each group of students had 2 feathers. They sprayed one feather with water and watched the water soak into the feather. Before spraying the second feather with water, the students coated it with oil or preened it. Upon spraying the second feather with water, the students noticed the water “bubble” on it and the water did not soak in.

Social Studies

Every Thursday, Mr. Paul will be visiting our classroom for the Junior Achievement Program. This program covers our Social Studies learning goals in Economics. Here is a little bit more about J.A.:

JA Our City introduces students to the basics of financial literacy, the characteristics of cities, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money.

Students will explore zoning found within a city; the importance of money to a city, paying taxes, and how people use different methods to pay for goods and services. They also will explore how financial institutions, entrepreneurs, and news media contribute to the financial well-being of a city.

The program is for students in third grade. It is composed of five sessions, and the average length of each session is 45 minutes.

JA programs correlate to state social studies, English, and math standards, and to the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and mathematics.

They also had to circle which nonfiction text feature helped them find their answer.

Winter Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be this Wednesday and Thursday after school. Unlike the Fall, I am not requesting a conference with every parent. I have already sent emails or notes to those families that I would like to meet with. However, if you would like a conference and I didn’t request one, you can still sign up.
