Science

This week in science we continued with the topic of dinosaurs. We asked the question, “Can you outrun a dinosaur?” Your child saw pictures showing how dinosaurs didn’t just leave behind bones, they also left footprints, some of which fossilized. By examining our own footprints and those of living animals, we were able to deduce how quickly some dinosaurs were able to run.

You can reinforce your child’s learning at home by pointing out footprints while on a walk. (Getting a shoe slightly wet in a puddle leaves behind visible tracks.) Ask your child, “Is it possible to tell the difference between walking and running just from footprints? How are they different?”

French Fur Trader Project

Please make sure your child is starting to plan and work on their French Fur Trader project at home. The project directions, dicut, and writing paper went home on Thursday, November 16th. You do NOT need to go to the store to buy items to decorate the French Fur Trader. This project is due on Friday, December 15th. The students will be sharing their projects with the class. Please have your child practice reading their writing since they will be reading it in front of the class. Thank You!

Message from the PTA: Founder’s Day

Founders Day nominations are now being taken. Founders Day is an opportunity for anyone in the community to acknowledge that special teacher, staff member or volunteer that has gone above and beyond. You also have the chance to submit nominations for supportive business partner or outstanding program of the year.

You can pick up a paper copy to nominate someone located in the magazine rack across from Arnos main office, or view the electronic forms located on member hub files or on our FB page.

Completed forms should be turned into the office in a sealed envelope marked “PTA Founders Day” Names of the individuals who nominated will remain confidential, but the written submission of who it is for and why will be read at the December PTA meeting. There members will have the opportunity to vote and the winners will be announced. Winners will be honored at a special district wide banquet dinner in February.

Submit your nomination today and attend the December 7th PTA meeting to cast your vote!

Three Fires Assembly

On Thursday, November 2nd, the Metro Parks visited the third graders to present information about The Three Fires Native American Tribes. During this interactive presentation, the students learned about their inventions, what they ate, and how they lived. They even had an opportunity to use a pump drill like The Three Fires would have used for building. The third graders also tried the fire starting technique that the Three Fires Tribes would have used to start a fire (Don’t worry, no fires were started!).

Congratulations to Peyton K. , Madison, Jeziah, Kate, Ava, and Connor for earning 100% on their Chapter 3 Addition Math Test!

Just for Fun

Dylan and Julia made a necklace that was so long that it even touched the ground when Mr. Zielinski wore it!

Curriculum Update

  • Reading-In terms of reading comprehension strategies, we have been working on making inferences in books. In order to practice our reading fluency, we have been doing an online program, as a class, called Lyrics2Learn. Also, in order to make sure all students get to practice their reading fluency and comprehension skills on their own level, we have a daily reading workshop where students are assigned certain jobs. Lastly, students read to self in order to improve reading fluency, comprehension, and stamina.
  • Writing-We have been writing about what we are thankful for.
  • Math-The Subtraction (regrouping and no regrouping) test will be on Friday, November 10th. We are working on using bar models to complete addition and subtraction story problems.
  • Social Studies-Students will take their Chapter 2 Test on Wednesdsay, November 8th. Chapter 2 is about Michigan’s First People.
  • Spelling-Students will review and practice spelling long e words that are spelled with ee or ea.
  • Science-In this unit students will develop an appreciation for how animals and the places they live (their habitats) are not constant—they have changed over time. Fossils give us a window to the animals and habitats of the past. Selective breeding shows us not only how some animals of the past became domesticated, but allows us to imagine how they might look in the future.
