Report Cards

Report Cards will be hand carried home on Friday. As the school year progresses, our students will have more challenging work to help their brains grow. Remember, a child could have earned a “1” in an area on the first quarter report card and not earn a “1” in that same area in the second quarter.

 Martin Luther King, Jr.

by Jaden PIerce

Martin Luther King,Jr. was born in Georgia in 1929.  He skipped two grades.  He grew up to be a preacher.  He married Coretta Scott in 1953.  They had four kids.  Dr. King wanted African American people to have the same rights as white people.  He led peaceful marches to make people pay attention to his ideas about changing unfair laws.  He made his famous “I have a dream” speech in 1964 and won the nobel peace prize the same year.

 Scholastic News

On most Fridays, for reading, our class reads and discusses a Scholastic News magazine. This magazine inclues recent happenings in our world. It gives our students the opportunity to read informational text that is relevant, interesting, and age appropriate. Also, in addition to reading text, this magazine includes pictures, maps, timelines, and diagrams. However, the students’ favorite part about this magazine is how it includes short videos to go with the articles. At the end of our reading and dicussion, the class gets to play an interactive Jeopardy style game about the magazine’s content.

Division Update

Students have been learning and using many different division strategies. Some students like to use counters to help them. For example, if the problem is 27 divided by 3, the student would count out 27 counters and split up those 27 counters into 3 equal groups. Then, the student would count up how many counters are in each group. When he/she counts 9, they know 27 divided by 3 is 9. Some students would rather use drawings. An example of this is, if the problem was 27 divided by 3, the student would draw 3 circles representing 3 groups. Then, the student would equally divide 27 by putting a dot in each of the 3 groups until 27 dots are divided equally between the 3 circles. Finally, the student would count 9 dots in each circle. Therefore, arriving at the same answer, 27 divided by 9 is 3.

The next math test will be early next week.

Language Arts-Making Plurals

The students in room 122 have been working on making plural words. In the pictures below, the students were given a singular noun and they had to make it plural. Before making the nouns plural, the students were introduced and practiced various ways to make a singular noun plural: just add s, add es, change y to i and then add es, and change the word (irregular plurals).

Just add s: tree–> trees

Add es: church–>churches

Change y to i, then add es: baby–>babies

Irregular Plural: woman–>women

Reading

Over the next few weeks we will be learning about Civil Rights Leaders. During this process, each child will select one civil rights leader and do a research report on him or her. We will have books from our media center in our classroom for the students to use. However, most students like to research Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr. Since I don’t have 23 books  on Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr, students are also invited to check out books for their local library or print off kid friendly material from the Internet and bring it to school.

Math Update

We have completed learning various strategies to solve multiplication problems. Now, the students need to work on memorizing his/her multiplication facts from 0-12. You can help your child memorize his/her facts using flashcards. Also, on most tablet devices, there is a free multiplication flashcard app.

This week we will start learning and understanding how to solve division problems.

Xtra Math

The students in room 122 do Xtra Math on the computer everyday. At the beginning of each math session, the students are given a progress quiz to assess if they know their math facts fluently (quickly).  The students are considered to know a math fact fluently when they get the answer correct in 3 seconds or less. After the progress quiz, the students practice or “race the teacher” on select math facts.  The Xtra Math program is used to help determine your child’s “Knows Math Facts” grade on his/her report card.

  •  If your child is on Multiplication or Division on Xtra Math, he/she will earn a “1” in the area of “Knows Math Facts”.
  • If your child is on Subtraction on Xtra Math, your child will earn a “2”  in the area of “Knows Math Facts”.
  • If your child is on Addition on Xtra Math and has mastered 75-99 facts, he/she will earn a “3” in the area of “Knows Math Facts”.
  • If your child is on Addition on Xtra Math and has mastered less than 75 facts, your child will earn a “4” in the area of “Knows Math Facts”.

Here a few helpful tips to help students do better on Xtra Math:

  • Stay focused on the computer screen.
  • Don’t go to the bathroom, get a drink, get your snack, etc. during your Xtra Math session.
  • Do not talk while doing Xtra Math.
  • Never guess!
  • Try to correctly answer as quickly as you can.
  • Do your best!

Rock and Mineral Scavenger Hunt

On Thursday, December 17th, the third graders participated in a rock and minearl scavenger hunt.  Parent led student groups had to search the hallways for posters about different rocks and mineral uses. Thank you to the parents who partipated. Without their help, we wouldn’t have been able to do this fun, learning activity.
