Metropark’s Mammals Presentation
Ms. Lisa was back again to teach us about mammals. She brought various props with her to engage the students. Some facts we learned:
The blue whale is the largest mammal in the world (bigger than 2 school busses). Its heart is about the size of 3 bookcases in our Media Center.
Bats are not blind, but use echolocation to help find their prey (insects, not people…LOL).
The smallest mammal in the world is the bumblebee bat.
Deer throw up and eat their food more than once. They have 4 stomachs.
Moose chew their food in a circular motion, and only live up to 10 years. Their antlers weigh about 25 pounds each.
Many students have taken hardcover textbooks home to use as a resource. At this time, all books need to be returned to Arno so that they can be included in our inventory. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
Greenfield Village Field Trip
We will be going to Greenfield Village on Wednesday, June 8th. We hope to leave Arno at 9:00am and return at approximately 2:00pm.
All chaperones will need to meet us by the water fountain at Greenfield Village. Chaperones should be at the water fountain at 9:20am. If you would like me to print out directions, please let me know asap. We will not have room for chaperones on the busses. Chaperones will also need to bring a bag/backpack to carry his/her group’s lunches. Chaperones will determine where and when to eat. Chaperones will also need a camera to help the students with their on-site assignment.
Here is the Group Assignment while at Greenfield Village: Take a group picture of/near a…

Boccabella Park Field Trip
The third graders in Mrs. Kalis’s class and Mrs. Warneck’s class will be walking to Boccabella Park for a fun end of the year field trip. We will be going to the park on Wednesday, June 15th. We will leave Arno about 8:40am and return to Arno about 11:30am.
Parents are welcome to join us at the park. Students and parents are also invited to bring snacks, water, and juice boxes.
While we are at the park, students can play at the park, use the equipment, and even enjoy some games of kickball. Parents and students are also allowed to bring up other outside equipment.
Laurie and her cold-blooded friends came to visit us on Friday. Laurie explained characteristics of amphibians and reptiles. She used her cold-blooded friends as examples to explain concepts, such as vertebrates, cold-blooded, the strength of a snapping turtle’s jaw, permeable, scaly skin, etc. Her painted turtle’s name was even Sherwin Williams!
Summer Reading Program
Summer is just around the corner…at least that’s what these energetic students and the hot weather are telling me.
Do you have plans to keep your child from falling victim to “summer slide”? Well, Arno is again having a read-a-thon this year! What a great way for students to use technology in an educational way.
Students will log their minutes/books as they read, and can also collect donations from friends and family. 85 % of funds raised will go to provide resources for our ever-changing curriculum. This summer read-a-thon began June 1st. Let’s get reading!
