Writing Homework

All third graders have a required writing homework assignment.  The theme of this writing is “Heroes Around Us.” Please help your child write a personal story about the theme and use the attached rubric as a guide. This story can be about a hero in their life (family member, coach, neighbor, etc…) or someone famous (sports star, community leader, etc…).Remember to have your child write the story, you may help, but he/she needs to do the actual writing.

The writing paper is included in this packet. Please have your child write the title of their writing on the top shorter line followed by his/her first name (Example: My Hero by Sue). Please do not include your child’s last name on the writing paper (for Reflections purposes). Your child should write their story on the longer lines below the title/first name line.

“Heroes Around Us” is also the theme for the Reflections contest this year. If your child would like to submit his/her writing for the Reflections contest, please sign and return the attached consent form. If your child participates in the Reflections contest, he/she will earn 2 extra credit points on this assignment.

This homework assignment is due by Thursday, November 1st.

Every morning, we watch the Arno News or Announcements. As a fun way for our Arno Cougars to learn vocabulary words, there is a vocabulary segment. The vocabulary segments feature staff, students, families, and community members. If you would like to make a vocabulary video, please email me and I will send you a word.

Motivational Mondays

September Super Cougar

Congratulations to Alaynna for being our class September Super Cougar. Alaynna is Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. She goes above and beyond our PBIS expectations. Way to go, Alaynna! Keep up the great work!

Social Studies

We took our first Social Studies test and congratulations to Alyssa, Cole, Ava, Bryce, Alaynna, LaNorah, Charlotte, Emerson, and Miguel for earning 100%!

English Language Arts

Every week your child will read an anchor text as well as a paired text. The anchor text is used to work on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills and strategies. The paired text may be similar in theme and/or genre. This text will reinforce vocabulary usage.

Here is our Focus Wall for next week:

Science

This week in science we started our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child learned how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

In class your child was presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they were pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Math

Room 122 is currently working on subtraction with and without regrouping. Please give your child some practice problems at home since some students still struggle with regrouping, especially regrouping across zeros.

Also, we recently took our Chapter 3 Addition test and many students earned 100%! Very impressive! Congratulations to Ava, Gwen, Bryce, Greg, Cole, Alyssa, Brooke, Charlotte, Emerson, Abigail, Alaynna, and LaNorah for earning 100% on their Addition math test!

Baseball Day

On Friday, the third grade classes were encouraged to wear baseball/softball gear since we read and learned about Roberto Clemente.
