Narrative Writing: Look Within

All third graders have a writing homework assignment.  The theme of this writing is “Look Within.” Please help your child write a personal story about the theme and use the attached rubric as a guide. This story can be about a talent/ability your child has, a time your child had to look within him/herself to do something, all about your child’s personality, the things he/she likes to do, something your child really likes about him/herself and why. (These are just a few interpretations, there are many ways to interpret and write a story about “Look Within”). Remember to have your child write the story, you may help, but he/she needs to do the actual writing.

The writing paper is included in this packet. Please have your child write the title of their writing on the top shorter line followed by his/her first name (Example: I Can Do This! by Sue). Please do not include your child’s last name on the writing paper (for Reflections purposes). Your child should write their story on the longer lines below the title/first name line.

“Look Within” is also the theme for the Reflections contest this year. If your child would like to submit his/her writing for the Reflections contest, please sign and return the attached consent form. If your child participates in the Reflections contest, he/she will earn 2 extra credit points on this assignment.

This homework assignment is due by Thursday, October 24th.

NWEA Testing and Individual Reading (IRP) Plans

Under Michigan’s Third Grade Reading Law, students who are deemed as being at risk in reading achievement will receive an Individualized Reading Plan. If your child scored a 180 or lower on their Fall Reading NWEA assessment, they will receive an Individualized Reading Plan (IRP). Your child’s reading plan was sent home on Friday. Please read, sign, and return your child’s IRP.

A score of 188 or higher is considered on target for beginning of third grade. Although scores from 181-187 are below average, they are not in the range that the law requires an IRP.

If your child earned a 181 or higher on their Fall NWEA Reading Assessment, they will not receive an IRP.

All students will be reassessed in the Winter.

Science

This week’s lesson on forces was about the force of magnetism. Your child got to spend time observing and discovering some of the basic properties of magnets!

One fun thing you can do together with your child is to explore this printable chart featuring wonderful household uses for magnets (see link below). This reinforces this week’s learning and also models how engineers or inventors think, something we’re doing more frequently in science class.

Math in Focus: Chapter 3: Addition Up to 10,000

In this chapter, students will learn to add two 4-digit numbers to 10,000 with or without regrouping using base-ten blocks and a place-value chart. Students are introduced to greater numbers with 4 digits. These numbers have a thousands place. Students will realize that the same strategies of adding right-to-left apply, and that regrouping of hundreds is the same as regrouping of tens in that while 10 tens = 1 hundred, 10 hundreds = 1 thousand. Vertical form is used to find the sum of 4-digit numbers and the strategies can be applied to solve real-world problems involving addition.

Field Trip: River Raisin National Battlefield Park

Our field trip to River Raisin National Battlefield Park is right around the corner…Wednesday, October 9th. Students will learn about Native American history. We plan on departing Arno by 8:40am and returning by 2:00pm. Due to the length of our trip, all students must pack a disposable lunch. Make sure your child’s lunch is labeled with his/her name. Please keep in mind that due to rain, the ground may be muddy. Rain boots and ponchos may be appropriate. Dress for the weather.

If your child is not attending this trip, please let me know if he/she will be present at school that day so I can make arrangements.

Many thanks to the parents that expressed interest in chaperoning our River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe. Due to limited bus capacity, chaperones may meet us there or follow the bus. Below are the following chaperones who have signed up to join us on Wednesday, October 9th. If you are not on the list and would like to join us, please send me an email. Science

We continued our study of forces this week, this time by considering some of the forces involved in designing a bridge (as an activity your child designed and tested their own bridge made of paper).

One fun thing you can do to support this week’s learning is sit down together with your child and enjoy browsing through some of the world’s most intriguing and extraordinary bridges (Click HERE). Based on what they learned in class, your child might point out to you where the bridge’s weight is supported.

September Super Cougar

Congratulations to Alejandro for being our class September Super Cougar. Alejandro is Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. He goes above and beyond our PBIS expectations. Way to go, Alejandro! Keep up the great work!

I am proud to announce that our entire class was able to participate in the September PBIS Reward of an extra recess. All students remained below 7 negative clip changes. Way to go, Room 129!
