Students will also work on grammar and spelling throughout the week. Assigned spelling words will be assessed on Fridays.

Environmental Interpretive Center

The third grade classes will be taking a field trip to the University of Michigan-Dearborn Environmental Interpretive Center. Due to scheduling, each class will be going on this trip separately. Our class is scheduled to go on Wednesday, March 4th. We will leave Arno at 8:45, and return to Arno around 11:20 to be back in time for technology and lunch. It is very important that students arrive to school on time.

We will be learning how to identify different types of trees, how to tap syrup from maple trees, and activities related to this experience. This field trip does require a hike through the woods, so please send your child to school with whatever the weather requires…rain coat, rain boots, umbrella, winter snow boots, winter coat, hat, gloves, scarves, etc.

Chaperones:If you are riding the bus, please arrive at Arno by 8:35. Please meet and wait outside of room 129. If you are driving yourself and meeting us at University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Environmental Interpretive Center, please meet there at 9:00. Below is a map to help direct you to parking and our final destination.

March is Reading Month

We kicked off March is Reading Month. One Book-One School is this year‘s theme. Our whole school is reading the book, Spring According to Humphrey. This book is just one book in a series about Humphrey, who is the class hamster at Longfellow School. Each student will receive a copy of the book on Monday. We encourage you to follow along and read this book at home as a family.
Please see the link below for all of the details and activities planned for this exciting month. Happy reading!

Science

This week in science we explored the mystery, “Why are some places always hot?” We learned about the idea of ‘climate’–that in every place on earth, the weather tends to act a certain way over the year. Your child learned how there are five basic climate zones: polar, temperate, mild, desert, and tropical. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by talking about a friend or family member who lives in a different climate, and discussing how that climate affects their life. Or look for aspects of our local environment which show what kind of climate we live in.

Weekly Readworks Assignment

Every Friday a new readworks online assignment is assigned. Students can work on this assignment in class or at home. We have time everyday for students to work on this online work so students do not need to do this at home. The weekly readworks assignment is due the following Thursday. Then, on Monday, we review all of the questions and answers. After we review, any student who received less than 80% must revise their readworks. Students who scored 80% or better, may or may not choose to revise their readworks.

Compliment Chart Reward

Great news! Our class filled up our THIRD compliment chart! Wow-Such amazing kids!! On Friday, we celebrated with a long inside recess where students could bring in games, electronics, or toys.

Mystery Science: How can we predict when it is going to storm?

This week in science we explored the mystery, “How can you predict when it’s going to storm?” We learned about differences between fair weather clouds and storm clouds, and the role of wind direction in determining whether a rain cloud will pass overhead. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by looking at clouds together and asking, “What kind of clouds do you think those are? I wonder if it will rain…” Ask your child if they’d like to show you their Storm Spotter’s Guide, a small book they made to help them remember how to use the clouds to predict the weather.

Mystery Science: Where do clouds come from?

This week in science we explored the mystery, “Where do clouds come from?” Your child observed important clues, such as the fact that water changes from a liquid to a gas (even without boiling!). You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by pointing out water vapor whenever you see it rising off hot water in the kitchen or bath, or pointing out tiny droplets of water forming on a mirror, windows, or glasses. Engage their minds by asking, “Wow, why do you think this is happening?”

Science educator Steve Spangler makes clouds by spraying warm water into cold air.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Arno will be once again doing the Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough fundraiser starting  Feb. 3 to help supplement the many requests we get from staff during the school year such as Spelling City, research-based activities, special project supplies, literacy materials, tech, etc.  Last year’s fundraiser helped us purchase many extra classroom supply requests, Playworks training for teachers and lunch staff, Zoo Phonics materials for kindergarten, Super Cougar pizza lunch supplies, an ipad for our Broadcast team, and professional development for teachers.

The PTA has been a tremendous resource for our building with all they have given, however, the many teacher requests received throughout the school year to give our students the very best experiences create a need to seek additional support.  Therefore, we have partnered with this company to offer you a choice of items should you choose to purchase any, that would support providing more resources for our teachers. The large envelope coming home on Feb. 3 and will contain all of the information needed (and there is an online order method).
