Reading Focus Wall

Our reading story for the week will be “The Albertosaurus Mystery”.

We will have a vocabulary quiz and comprehension quiz on Friday, March 5th.

March is Reading Month

This year’s theme: March Reading Madness!

Each week all grades will listen to the same three books in the tournament and vote for their favorite at the end of each week. The school’s weekly overall favorites, The Final Three, will move on to “compete” against each other, with students voting for their favorite book to be the winner of March Reading Madness! Please see the calendar below for other activities throughout the month of March.

Math

Last Friday, students started to explore the concept of fractions. In Chapter 14, your child will learn about fractions as parts of a region or parts of a set.

Some of the skills your child will practice are:
• reading, writing, and identifying fractions of wholes
• identifying equivalent fractions
• writing fractions in simplest form
• comparing and ordering fractions
• adding and subtracting like fractions

Mystery Science: Invisible Forces

Lesson 2: What makes bridges so strong?

We will continue our study of forces this week, this time by considering some of the forces involved in designing a bridge. In the activity, Paper Bridge Engineering, students will use their knowledge of forces to build a strong bridge that supports as many pennies as possible — using only paper.

One fun thing you can do to support this week’s learning is sit down together with your child and enjoy browsing through some of the world’s most intriguing and extraordinary bridges (see link). Based on what they learned in class, your child might point out to you where the bridge’s weight is supported. http://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/30-of-the-craziest-bridges-in-the-world

Empty Plastic Peanut Butter Jars

All the third grade classes are collecting clear empty plastic peanut butter jars with lids. These are for an upcoming science activity. All donated items will be quarantined for 2 weeks before use. Thank you!

Also, we are still collecting egg cartons and empty cereal boxes.

Asynchronous Days: Tuesday, 3/2 & Wednesday, 3/3

Both Tuesday and Wednesday will be asynchronous. This means that students will not report to Arno, but instead use Google Classroom from home to complete tasks and assignments independently. There are no Zooms scheduled for these days. Students are expected to have all work completed and ready for discussion on Thursday, 3/4. Below are the schedules that students should follow in Google Classroom:

NWEA Testing Results

All make-up testing is complete. Please look for your child to bring home their Winter NWEA results on Monday, March 1st. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions regarding the report.

Reminders

Students should…

  • bring a water bottle each day.
  • bring his/her charged chromebook to school each day.

Reading

Students received new Reader’s Notebooks (Grade 3, Vol. 2) last week. Students may keep their old Reader’s Notebooks (Grade 3, Vol. 1) at home.

Our reading story for the week of Monday, February 22nd will be “Judy Moody Saves the World!”.

We will have a vocabulary quiz and comprehension quiz on Friday, February 26th.

Math

This week, we will continue discussing bar graphs, picture graphs, and line plots. In first and second grades, your child learned how to read, interpret, and create bar graphs where information was connected to a tally chart. This year, students will be creating bar graphs while using different scales.

Students received new Math workbooks (Math in Focus 3B). Students may keep their old workbooks (version 3A) at home.

Social Studies: Meet Michigan

Students finished up Meet Michigan Chapter 7. A Kahoot Review is available in Google Classroom within Friday, February 19th’s post. I am also including the link for the Chapter 7 Study Guide. The student’s received a hard copy in class on Friday. The Chapter 7 Test will be on Monday, February 22nd.

Chapter 7 Study Guide

Meet Michigan textbooks will remain in our desks while we switch gears to science.

Mystery Science: Invisible Forces

This upcoming week in science we begin our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child will learn how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

Lesson 1: How could you win a tug-of-war against a bunch of adults?

In class your child will be presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they are pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Many thanks to those families that were able to send in cereal boxes. These will help us with one of our science activities this week!

NWEA Testing Results

Thank you for sending your child to school well-rested and prepared with a charged chromebook. We tested last week on Thursday and Friday. We still have a few make-ups to complete, but once scores are finalized, I will be sending home the parent report. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions regarding the report.

Heavy Backpacks?

It has come to my attention that some students have VERY heavy backpacks. After further investigation, we have found that many students are carrying extra items back and forth each day.

Here is what your child should bring home and to school each day:

  1. school chromebook
  2. math 3B workbook
  3. reader’s notebook volume 2
  4. journal
  5. orange folder
  6. planner

Students do not need to bring home their big Journeys book, Meet Michigan textbook, close reader workbook, bag of leveled books, or supplies. However, if you want your child to bring these items home, they can.

Also, we finished using our math 3A workbook and reader’s notebook volume 1. These 2 workbooks can stay at home.

Egg Cartons & Cereal Boxes

All the third grade classes are collecting egg cartons and cereal boxes. The egg cartons are for art class and the cereal boxes will become science supplies. All donated items will be quarantined for 2 weeks before use. Thank you!
