Math

As shared with you at Meet the Teacher Night, we have a new math series this year. Our next chapter, chapter 6, is Multiplication Facts 6-9. However, our students need to be taught basic multiplication concepts/strategies before jumping right into more difficult multiplication facts. In order to make sure our children are ready for more difficult concepts, we will be using a few chapters on muliplication and division from the second grade series before completing the third grade work. This is okay to do. In fact, Math in Focus (the new math series) encourages doing this for the first few years while our students transition to this series.

Mother-Son Night

A BIG thank  you to Arno’s PTA for a wonderful Mother and Son Night. The boys enjoyed the multiple bouncers.

Accelerated Reader

The students are busy reading books and taking Accelerated Reader tests. Mrs. Byrne and Mrs. Mantua helped the students pick out 2 library books on their level. Students are unable to take A.R. tests at home. However, students can read books at home and take a test in the classroom. If you want to see if a book has an AR test, please click on the link to check http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx?client=HomeConnect

Great work to Grace for earning a 100% on her Accelerated Reader test! She read the book at home and came to school ready to take the test.

Book Buddies

It was such a nice day on Friday, we helped our kindergarten book buddies write their numbers 1-10 on the sidewalk with chalk and then we played outside with our buddies.

Congratulations to Mallory, Hailey, Gabby, Rosie, Marie, Alex, Grant, Jake, and Sam for earning 100% on their Chapter 4 Math Test! Chapter 4 was about subtraction with and without regrouping.

We are Thankful!

The students in room 122 are starting each school day by writing 3 things they are thankful for. Students are not allowed to repeat thankful items. Here is a sample of student work (this student gave me permission to share his/her work):

20161110_091218

Accelerated Reader

The first quarter goal was 7 points or higher while maintaining an accuracy of at least 85%. Here a few helpful tips the students learned about Accelerated Reader during the first quarter: read a book carefully before taking a test, use the book to look up answers during a test, don’t take a test on a book if you haven’t read it or it was read a long time ago, don’t wait until the last day to try to meet your goal, and read a book at your level.

The following students met their first quarter goal: Braylin, Wyatt, Ramona, Sam, Jake, Alex, Mallory, Gabby, Kylee, Rosie, Marie, Grant, Hailey, and Clara. These students may bring in an electronic or non-electronic game for game time on Wednesday.

If your child didn’t meet his/her goal, they will be reading and/or taking accelerated reader tests instead of having game time.

The second quarter A.R. goal is 8 points or higher while maintaining an accuracy of at least 85%. Students may read books at home and take tests at school. Most Arno library books have A.R. tests.

Conferences will be on Wednesday, November 30th (5:00-7:30p.m.) and Thursday, December 1st (12:45-3:15p.m. & 5:00-7:30p.m.). Please sign up for a conference time. Because conferences are scheduled in 15 minute increments, please be respectful of others and arrive on time.

Xtra Math

Our first quarter goal for Xtra Math was to finish addition. Congratulations to the following students who finished addition on Xtra Math: Alex, Ben, Braylin, Grant, Hailey, Jake, Kellen, Mallory, Sam, Samantha M, and Wyatt.

The second quarter goal for Xtra Math is to finish subtraction. In order to earn a “1” on the second quarter report card in the area of “Knows Math Facts”, students will need to meet or exceed this goal.

Accelerated Reader Goal

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that checks students understanding of “Right There” questions from a book. The first quarter A.R. (Accelerated Reader) goal is earning 7 points while maintaining 85% accuracy. Students can take A.R. tests on books they read at home and at school. While taking a test, students can also look back in the book to help them during the test. Students can only take A.R. tests at school.

Students who have their 7 points while maintaining 85% accuracy by the end of the day on Friday, November 11th, will earn game time.  Students will be allowed to bring in games from home. The reward day is TBD.

Good News Shout Out!! Sam read 2 books at home on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, his first stop was to the computer to take his 2 A.R. tests. Drumroll….Not only did Sam get a 100% on both tests but he earned over 7 points while maintaining over 85% accuracy.  Way to go Sam!!!
