Reading

Our reading story for the week will be “Life on the Ice”.

We will have a vocabulary quiz and comprehension quiz on Friday, March 26th.

Science

Last week’s lesson on forces was about the force of magnetism. Your child got to spend time observing and discovering some of the basic properties of magnets!

One fun thing you can do together with your child is to explore this printable chart featuring wonderful household uses for magnets (see link below). This reinforces last week’s learning and also models how engineers or inventors think, something we’re doing more frequently in science class.

Math

We have been working on “Comparing Fractions”. We went over a practice test on Thursday, 3/18. Our math test will be on Monday, 3/22.

In this math unit we have…

  • worked with wholes that are divided into more than 4 equal parts.
  • found equivalent fractions.
  • compared fractions with like denominators.
  • compared fractions with unlike denominators.
  • found fractions of a whole and a set.
  • found the related number of items for a fraction of a set of more than one object.
  • ordered fractions.

Our next math unit will be on “Telling Time”.

ReflexMath

Please remember that mastery of multiplication and division facts is the goal for the end of third grade. Students should be completing a session of ReflexMath daily. We try to fit it in during the school day, but this is not always possible. Please remind your child after school in case it hasn’t been completed yet for the day. So far, here are the classroom stats:

Report Cards

Report cards are available via Parent Connect and were posted on Friday, March 19th. If you are unable to access or need login information, please contact Cathy Anderson (andersonc@appublicschools.com), our school secretary. If you are interested in tutoring for your child, I am including the most recent tutor list. Please know that free tutoring is also available through our NJHS students. Links are posted in our Google Classroom.

Tutor List Winter 2020/21

Please keep checking Parent Connect throughout this last card marking. Assignments (both corrected and missing) are listed so that you can see your child’s progress. Parent Connect is a very important look into your child’s day.

Reading

Our reading story for the week will be Two Bear Cubs.

We will have our comprehension quiz and vocabulary quiz on Thursday, March 18th.

Science

This week’s lesson on forces was about the force of friction. Specifically we considered friction in the context of solving the mystery, “How can you slide faster down a slide?”

One fun thing you can do with your child to help support this week’s learning is to watch a video of this new invention, called “liquiglide.” This is a situation where removing friction would make your life easier. The grape jelly video is impressive: https://vimeo.com/89936192

Math

We are continuing learning about fractions. This week we have been learning how to compare fractions. We compared fractions with multiple strategies: same numerators, same denominators, drawings, and finding a common denominator.

We will have a practice test on Thursday, March 18th. Our “Comparing Fractions” test will be on Monday, March 22nd.

Parent Survey

It is that time of year… we are in need of your opinion of how things are going at Arno for school improvement planning.  Please take a moment and complete this year’s survey that has taken our remote status into consideration. We survey three groups annually- staff, students in grades 3-5, and parents.  This valuable information goes into our school improvement planning so Arno can be its very best!  The link will be active until March 9.  Thank you for your participation in helping us always improve!

Science

We continued our study of forces this week, this time by considering some of the forces involved in designing a bridge. In the activity, Paper Bridge Engineering, students used their knowledge of forces to build a strong bridge that supports as many pennies as possible — using only paper.

One fun thing you can do to support this week’s learning is sit down together with your child and enjoy browsing through some of the world’s most intriguing and extraordinary bridges (see link). Based on what they learned in class, your child might point out to you where the bridge’s weight is supported. http://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/30-of-the-craziest-bridges-in-the-world

Mr. Peace Assembly

On Friday, the students watched a virtual assembly by Mr. Peace. Mr. Peace talked about embracing diversity and ways to be kind. Afterwards, students had a chance to share personal experiences with the class. A special thank you to our PTA for funding this assembly!

March is Reading Month

During the first week of March is Reading Month, we read 3 books and the ENTIRE school voted for this week’s winner. The winning book for week one was…I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll.

The school’s weekly overall favorites, The Final Three, will move on to “compete” against each other, with students voting for their favorite book to be the winner of March Reading Madness! Please see the calendar below for other activities throughout the month of March.

Math

Last Friday, students started to explore the concept of fractions. In Chapter 14, your child will learn about fractions as parts of a region or parts of a set.

Some of the skills your child will practice are:
• reading, writing, and identifying fractions of wholes
• identifying equivalent fractions
• writing fractions in simplest form
• comparing and ordering fractions
• adding and subtracting like fractions

Mystery Science: Invisible Forces

Lesson 2: What makes bridges so strong?

We will continue our study of forces this week, this time by considering some of the forces involved in designing a bridge. In the activity, Paper Bridge Engineering, students will use their knowledge of forces to build a strong bridge that supports as many pennies as possible — using only paper.

One fun thing you can do to support this week’s learning is sit down together with your child and enjoy browsing through some of the world’s most intriguing and extraordinary bridges (see link). Empty Plastic Peanut Butter Jars

All the third grade classes are collecting clear empty plastic peanut butter jars with lids. These are for an upcoming science activity. All donated items will be quarantined for 2 weeks before use. Thank you!

Also, we are still collecting egg cartons and empty cereal boxes.

Asynchronous Days: Tuesday, 3/2 & Wednesday, 3/3

Both Tuesday and Wednesday will be asynchronous. This means that students will not report to Arno, but instead use Google Classroom from home to complete tasks and assignments independently. There are no Zooms scheduled for these days. Students are expected to have all work completed and ready for discussion on Thursday, 3/4. Below are the schedules that students should follow in Google Classroom:

This year, students will be creating bar graphs while using different scales.

Students received new Math workbooks (Math in Focus 3B). Students may keep their old workbooks (version 3A) at home.

Social Studies: Meet Michigan

Students finished up Meet Michigan Chapter 7. A Kahoot Review is available in Google Classroom within Friday, February 19th’s post. I am also including the link for the Chapter 7 Study Guide. The student’s received a hard copy in class on Friday. The Chapter 7 Test will be on Monday, February 22nd.

Chapter 7 Study Guide

Meet Michigan textbooks will remain in our desks while we switch gears to science.

Mystery Science: Invisible Forces

This upcoming week in science we begin our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child will learn how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

Lesson 1: How could you win a tug-of-war against a bunch of adults?

In class your child will be presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they are pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Many thanks to those families that were able to send in cereal boxes. These will help us with one of our science activities this week!

NWEA Testing Results

Thank you for sending your child to school well-rested and prepared with a charged chromebook. We tested last week on Thursday and Friday. We still have a few make-ups to complete, but once scores are finalized, I will be sending home the parent report. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions regarding the report.
